Good Vegetarian Snacks for Travel

Photo Credit Thinkstock Images/Comstock/Getty Images A vegetarian traveler is wise to keep plenty of healthy snacks on hand whether traveling by plane, train, boat, or automobile. You will need appropriate options that are within easy reach in case you find yourself on a plane that has no options for a vegetarian meal or snack, or you can't find a health food store at your destination city. Pack a food box with non-perishable, delicious and nutritious snacks for peace of mind and a satisfied stomach.

Peanut butter is the protein-rich food paste that's made from dry, roasted peanuts. It's convenient for travel and highly nutritious. It contains vitamin E, vitamin B3, folate, fiber, magnesium, and the antioxidant p-coumaric acid. Natural and organic peanut butters are available in most box stores and markets, and they don't have partially hydrogenated oils, which is an ingredient you should limit. Spread the peanut butter on crackers, celery, rice cakes or bread for a quick, easy snack on the go.

A trail mix is a very healthy, non-perishable snack that can be poured into resealable bags that you may toss into purses, backpacks or even pockets. As Karla Cook explained in "The New York Times," some foods you could add to your trail mix include nuts, dried fruits, pretzels, dry cereal and coconut flakes. Other options include granola, vegan chocolate chips, cereal, sunflower seeds, sesame sticks, raisins, baked soybeans and figs.

There is a plethora of vegetarian convenience foods you may bring with you. Though you may engage in a vegetarian diet mainly for health reasons, travel is a good time to indulge in a couple of decadent snacks so you can keep your energy levels up and help ease the stress of travel. Some companies make several types of vegan non-dairy milk chocolate candy bars that rival any popular milk-based brands. Other companies make vegan marshmallows that are often produced in shapes for the holidays, which will help make holiday travel a little more fun. You might want to try vegan jerky, which some people say tastes better than any meat versions. You will find at your local grocery store vegan cookies made by well-known companies.

Fresh fruits and vegetables almost always travel well. Of course some travel better than others. Pack a bananas or an apple for a really easy snack that requires no utensils. Freeze grapes overnight before traveling; they will thaw and be fresh and crisp later when you are ready to eat them. Bring a wide variety of berries. Fix a big salad in a plastic container that seals tightly so that you can enjoy a refreshing meal on the go, but be sure to drain the lettuce well before packing. Carrots and small tomatoes are also easy and nutritious solutions for the munchies.
